MB Middle School Engineering

In STEM, Middle School students will be learning how to think like an engineer by using the Engineering Design Process, how to use advanced tools such as Laser Engravers, 3D Printing, and Arduino robotics & coding to create novel projects, and that it sometimes takes more perseverance, humility, and courage than we care to put forth in order to meet these lofty goals. STEM is challenging, but it is exciting and rewarding.

7th Grade:  Seventh grade students will begin 1st trimester with an introduction to Tinkercad which is the software we use for 3D printing.  After creating a couple of 3D objects, they will expand their laser engraving skills by completing more challenging puzzles and structures and will expand their circuitry knowledge to included RGB LEDs and ultrasonic sensors.  Parents will be able to see their final animal projects during STEMapalooza in November. The 7th grade STEMapalooza date for Motsenbocker is Thursday, November 16th in the gym. Parents of 7th graders, watch for a separate email by end of October with more information.

6th Grade:  Sixth grade students begin 2nd trimester with an introduction to laser engraving. They work individually and in groups to design puzzles and structures.  Then, they will begin learning circuitry and coding of servos, LEDs and infrared sensors in Arduino.  At the end of the trimester, they will put together all they have learned to create a Mars rover that parents will be able to see at STEMapalooza in February.

8th Grade:  Eighth grade students will end the year in STEM and will be expected to stretch their thinking and create laser engraved and 3D objects with greater complexity.  While coding, they will learn to research how to use a new sensor so that they can create final projects that solve a problem and include sensors of their choice.  Parents are invited to STEMapalooza to see these final projects in action in May.
STEM INSTRUCTORS:
My name is Wendy Brownlee and, after 22 years of teaching math, I became one of the STEM instructors for MB middle school in 2022.  I am a Colorado native and attended University of Northern Colorado where I met my husband.  We have 2 beautiful daughters – one is a sophomore at University of Northern Colorado and one is a 7th grader at American Academy MB!  When I am not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading and learning new things!
My name is Jennifer Gant and I am originally from Texas and have loved living in Colorado for the past 17 years. I spent ten years teaching Third Grade with the later of those years specializing in math and science. My last 3 years in 3rd grade were at American Academy Castle Pines before coming to Motsenbocker to join the STEM department. This is my fourth year in Middle School STEM, and I love the opportunities this class provides our students. In my free time I enjoy photography, exploring Colorado, and traveling. Last summer’s trip to Iceland was my favorite adventure, so far!
