LATE START Coming Up - DCSD Security Drills at American Academy

American Academy has a planned late start at each campus so our staff can take part in important security training. The Douglas County School District (DCSD) Security Team visits schools in Douglas County to do important Standard Response Protocol Lock Down training and drills (and we are thrilled to once again have them at American Academy)! Our entire staff is required to participate in the before-school training session and then, with the help of DCSD Security, we will all (including students) be running through a Lock Down drill.

Please refer to the dates and times below for your campus and then please read to the end of this email for very important resource information when talking with your children about school safety.

60-MINUTE (1-HOUR) LATE SCHOOL START
CP campus: OCT. 25
MB campus: OCT. 27
LM campus: OCT. 28

K-8
  • All morning K-8 extracurricular activities will be canceled.
  • All staff and parent meetings scheduled before 9:05 am will be canceled — a staff member will contact you to reschedule.
  • Morning Kindergarten will be in session (LM & MB).
  • Morning K-8 carpool will begin at 8:35 am.
  • K-8 classes will begin at 9:05 am.

KINDIEPREP
  • Morning KindiePrep ExtraCare (before-care) will be canceled.
  • KindiePrep doors open at 9:15 am.
  • KindiePrep classes begin at 9:30 am.

In addition, we will be conducting a Lockdown Drill on the dates above with the entire campus and DCSD security. Our experience doing these drills with DCSD security has been very positive for the kids and adults alike, as they always take the time to have age appropriate discussions with the kids and answer questions they may have.

With that, an important component of running safety drills and having planned late starts, is the emotional well being of our students, parents and staff. We realize that everyone responds differently to these situations, and we would like to provide resources for our parents to help in talking with your children. We have a link on our Student Support Services webpage with talking points and resources for additional help.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child participating in this drill, please reach out to their teacher or to our school counselor. We are happy to help in any way we can.
