Once Upon A Mattress – Audition Information

We’re so excited to welcome middle school and 5th grade certificate program students in Grades 5–8 to join us for our upcoming production of Once Upon A Mattress Youth Edition Performances at The Schoolhouse Theater April 23th-25th.

Set in a quirky medieval kingdom, the story follows Princess Winnifred of the Swamp, an unconventional and spirited young woman who seeks to marry Prince Dauntless. However, Queen Aggravain, the prince’s overbearing mother, has declared that no one may marry until her son does—and she’s determined that no princess will ever be good enough. To win the prince’s hand, Princess Winnifred must pass an impossible test designed by the queen. With the help of some clever friends in the castle, Winnifred takes on the challenge, proving that true royalty comes from courage, heart, and staying true to oneself. This youth-friendly adaptation keeps all the humor, charm, and catchy songs of the original while being tailored for younger performers and audiences.

🎶 What to Prepare for Auditions

Singing Portion:

  • Prepare a 16–32 bar cut (about 30 sec to 1 min) of a song from a Broadway show

  • Choose a song that showcases your vocal range and lets you act and show character!

  • Bring a karaoke/instrumental track (or upload it in the audition form).

We’ve also included a link below with a variety of suggested audition song choices, organized by character types. These songs are not mandatory—they’re simply here to help guide and inspire. In fact, in the world of theatre, it’s often preferred that students choose a song outside of the show for auditions. This allows our production team to see the full range of your child’s potential, rather than placing them into just one character “box.”There are also countless helpful resources online to assist in finding the perfect audition cut—we encourage students to explore and find something that suits both their voice and their personality!

Suggested Audition Song Resources:

  • If you have any ballet and/or pointe experience please be sure to let the directorial team know!

Pantomime Portion:

  • In this show the use of pantomime performance is very prevalent

  • Pantomime is a silent performance technique where actors use their body movements and facial expressions to communicate without speaking, sounds, or props
