K-8 Lightning Dismissal

Carpool is CANCELLED. All parents must drive to school and park to come inside (when safe) for your children. Please be sure to check-in with the SDM app when you arrive on campus. OUTSIDE after-school activities will be brought inside, unless otherwise noted; INSIDE after-school activities will continue, including KindiePrep ExtraCare. Walkers must be picked up using an ID. KindiePrep students must be picked up as usual.
May be used at the discretion of administration when lightning has been sighted within 10 miles of an American Academy campus.

At times, we may put carpool into a HOLD STATUS.
This means that we are waiting 5-15 minutes to see if the storm/incident passes. Please wait in your car until you get further direction. We will either resume carpool as normal or proceed with our lightning dismissal procedure. Please remain in your car, and do not check your child in on the SDM app until directed to do so. Thank you.

  1. Notification will be sent through the emergency communications system (voice and text) and posted on social media and posted on the front page of our website.

  2. Parents will check in with their SDM app per campus specific directions above. If your children were designated walkers or in an outdoor activity, you will check in with the front office.

  3. Parents show their SDM app or ID and follow the direction of your front office on where to retrieve your child.

  4. Parents must take responsibility for their own safety. Because a lightning dismissal is a slower process designed to keep STUDENTS (our first priority as a school) safe, it can result in PARENTS waiting outside. Because students are safe inside, immediate student pick-up (though desirable) is not an emergency; students will be held until a parent arrives. Parents are encouraged to use common sense, weather reports, and other available news sources to evaluate the safety of approaching the building and/or waiting outside in a line. If necessary, parents may pull forward and park in our parking lot to wait -- or even leave the campus to park elsewhere and wait -- until the line lessens and/or it is safe to approach the building and pick up.

  5. Parents should access the parking lot by driving through the regular carpool traffic line in an orderly manner.
    • DO NOT attempt to go around the carpool line to reach the parking lot. Students are safe and warm inside the building, and someone will stay with them until a parent can pick them up.

    • DO NOT park against the curb in the fire lane in front of the school. This blocks emergency access to the building, blocks other parents from accessing our parking lots, and endangers all students and staff remaining in the building.

    • DO NOT ask the front office staff to bring your student outside.

    • DO NOT park in the parking lot and call to have your student sent outside. Parents must walk in to retrieve students in person.

  6. Parents will park and walk into the building through the front lobby, and then proceed as directed.
